New 1Tbit per second cable specified

REANNZ, which operates KAREN (Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network), is seeking registrations of interest to build a new trans-Tasman telecommunications submarine cable.
In the 2008 Budget, the government committed a maximum of $15 million to improve trans-Tasman connectivity and approved REANNZ as the lead agency.
REANNZ will act as the sole procurement agent, co-opting external resources where required. The capacity assets will be purchased by REANNZ following provision of equity by the Crown, and will be an asset on REANNZ’s balance sheet.
Qualifying criteria for respondents include the supplier offering a new trans-Tasman submarine cable, not a relocated cable, nor a service based on an existing cable. The supplier must be a new cable-owning entity in the trans-Tasman submarine cable market.
The design capacity must be greater than 1Tbit/s, and the cable must have a service life of more than 20 years.
The intended New Zealand landing site must be geographically diverse from that of any other submarine cable.
