An inaugural survey by industry group NZICT has found IT companies are continuing to suffer from skill shortages.
Out of 100 respondents, 83 percent reported difficulties in recruiting qualified staff and that this is having a medium to major effect on their business. More than 50 percent of companies surveyed are looking to recruit technical staff.
NZICT chief executive Brett O’Riley says the survey demonstrates continued employment opportunities and demand across a range of paid roles, including programming, project management and network and systems engineering.
Survey respondents were also asked if they believe the government’s ultra fast broadband rollout would be affected by a skill shortage. Forty two percent of respondents indicated there is likely to be a skills shortage, while 58 percent did not think a skill shortage is likely. The shortage is meant to affect network architects, designers, engineers and telecommunications technicians.
The survey was conducted by NZICT on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Development and compiled by Axcel Institute. One hundred and one respondents started the questionnaire, and 77 completed it.
