In a push to bring the open source software message to the non-hacker public, the Wellington open-source conference, linux.conf.au, is holding an Open Day at the Wellington Town Hall tomorrow.
More than 30 exhibitors from business, education and community groups will be demonstrating some of the software they have developed, organisers say.
There will be activities for children with the One Laptop per Child laptops and demonstrations from the Wellington makerspace group, which provides space, advice and networking opportunities for people with do-it-yourself projects (not necessarily involving computing).
The RepRap three-dimensional printer (www.reprap.org) will be demonstrated at the Open Day and two New Zealand electric cars run with open source software will be on show.
Three sessions about free and open source software will form part of the day: "Open Source for Newbies" by Cat Allman and Leslie Hawthorn of Google’s open source office, "50 ways to love your project" by Josh Berkus and Selena Deckelmann and "Geek my Car" by Jon Oxer, exploring the potential of open-source computer power in motor vehicles.
Admission will be free.
