Job cuts will focus on roles behind the customer front lines
By Comptuerworld Staff | Auckland | Thursday, 15 April, 2010
Telecom today confirmed that 200 management jobs are to be axed as part of cost-cutting measures following this morning’s share trading halt and subsequent re-statement of financial guidance for 2011 and 2012.
Computerworld understands Telecom intends to cut the 200 management positions — but none at AAPT — and that the cull will focus on managers who aren’t "customer-facing".
Telecom spokesman Mark Watts declined to comment, referring Computerworld to an investor and media conference Telecom is to hold at 4pm today to discuss the situation.
Update: Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds told the meeting Telecom cut $113 million in costs as part of its "Cost Out" programme in 2009 and is on track to cut $244 million in 2010.
On announcing the staff cuts, Reynolds said he believes there are further opportunities to simplify and align the business and to cut duplication.
