Datacom is seeking a site in Wellington for a new datacentre in order to expand its capacity.
The company is also undertaking a major upgrade of its Christchurch facility where chief executive Greg Davidson says there is big demand.
“We’re using re-purposed equipment from our old Auckland datacentre,” he says. “Christchurch customers want a datacentre in their city.”
Last year, Datacom opened a new state-of-the-art datacentre in Auckland.
Davidson says Wellington is part of a strategic plan for 2010.
“We’re still looking for a suitable site. The focus in Wellington is on government demand.”
Computerworld understands a likely site has been identified.
Davidson says the growth in local facilities will not focus on serving the company’s Australian customers.
“We’re got some trans-Tasman customers, but Australian customers generally wanted to be housed there.” Datacom has a datacentre in Melbourne.
The move to upgrade datacentres is happening elsewhere, with IBM last year announcing it would build an $80 million purpose-built facility in Auckland.
Unisys has upgraded its Kapiti datacentre, while Iconz and Maxnet have both invested in their facilities with Maxnet having built a new datacentre in the South Island.
