Redesign integrates site with social networking, adds other features
By Computerworld Staff | Auckland | Tuesday, 25 May, 2010 | 14 Comments
Computerworld’s website has been redesigned, in order to give readers a better experience online.
New features that have been added include better integration with social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
A recent reader survey showed that 61 percent of Computerworld readers use social networking, so better use of it on our website was a high priority.
Also, the “Most Popular” box has been expanded to include the most emailed as well as the most read, commented and shared stories on the site.
Another change is a tweak in the comments system, with the ability to post a comment now included at the top of a story. We welcome comments, and making it easier to post them was also a priority.
Speaking of comments, what do you think of the new site? We're interested in your views.

Layout
Please push the two side menus away from the content, it feels cramped as!
Maybe make a www.computerworld.com/mobile site if it causes issues on mobiles.

Twitter Integration
Lack of URL shortener in Twitter share function is unfortunate. No point using it if I have to shorten the URL myself to get the tweet under 140 chars

URL shortner for twitter
Computerworld ran a story about this a while back... and then doesn't do it? Not that I am a twitter freak, but I do read Computerworld.

About Time!
The previous website was boring, cluttered and hard to read. This is a fresh breeze. All I can say is ABOUT TIME!

Testing on Linux?
You might want to ad Linux (using Firefox and Ubuntu) to you tests. Some of the features don't really work well (probably due to font size differences).
So the Section bar at the top has "Fryup" and "events" spilling into the next line and covering the date in a strange way. While the Popular events, Sponsored Links and Google ads on the right are a little squashed.

ok.. Try there on for size
1. Compress your page size for download on mobiles
2. Speed up the drawing of the page
3. Aside from being able to share story links on social media river what else will you provide
4. Can you decrease the visual pollution around the articles, maybe by making the headlines stand out more with the articles - font colours more than size
5. Polls - let us vote on topical issues
Fine detail all in all its a nice UX and i'll continue to read your content - regardless of mr whinge.

Yeah, predictive text on a mobile can be tricky hence some out of place words, but what do you mean heal thyself?
I don't get it...

Lots of good things going on, just that many would prefer to stay under the local media radar
