Four CIO roles to become one in ‘super ministry’ merger

ICT chief for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment named in October

Four CIO or equivalent positions are likely to be disestablished as part of the creation of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Of the agencies make up the recently formed ministry, four had CIO-type positions, says MBIE spokeswoman Jane McSweeney.

The position titles were: deputy secretary commercial solutions (former Ministry of Economic Development ), director ICT (Labour Department), CIO (Department of Building and Housing) and CIO (Ministry of Science and Innovation).

The CIOs are among 39 senior management and corporate positions that a MBIE media statement earlier this year identified as likely to disappear following the transition. Some of these positions are currently vacant, says the statement. “These positions will not be disestablished until MBIE’s entire structure is confirmed, in October.”

The MBIE CIO appointment is due to be announced in October. “At that stage it is not expected that there will then be a fully unified ICT infrastructure for the Ministry,” says McSweeny.

It is expected to take up to18 months to complete the corporate integration programme. When the new structure is implemented the MBIE CIO will have full responsibility for the ICT function.

According to the job advertisement, the new CIO immediate tasks will be to: “define priorities to move MBIE to a fully integrated ICT platform; ensure the provision of reliable, responsive and cost-effective ICT services to MBIE during the transition to a single ICT platform and develop an ICT strategy for MBIE,” says the advertisement for the position.

The CIO will report to the deputy chief executive (corporate services).
