Vodafone and Apple decline to comment

New Zealand’s iPhone 4 launch has been delayed, with Apple and its official distributor Vodafone saying little about the reasons why.

Vodafone spokesperson Paul Brislen is referring all media enquiries to Apple, while Apple is remaining tightlipped about when the device will be on sale. However, at 11.15am Brislen issued this short statement via email:

"Great news! iPhone 4 is available from selected VF stores today – midday. Stock is limited so only avail on account. 4 selected stores see vodafone.co.nz/iphone."

And now Apple has released this comment: "We are thrilled to be selling iPhone 4 in our Apple Online Store starting this evening.
For further availability details please contact Vodafone."

There had been plenty of build up to the launch of the iPhone 4. Brislen confirmed to Computerworld last week that — in line with a announcement made by Apple CEO Steve Jobs — it would go on sale on July 30. This was backed up by an official announcement by Apple earlier this week touting the launch in 17 countries today.

The build up to the iPhone 4 launch has been significant. Vodafone has provided details about the device, and how to purchase a Micro-SIM (which is required for iPad and iPhone 4 devices) on its website, inviting customers to pre-register their interest. That information was removed last night. Curiously this morning a banner advertising the iPhone 4 remained in place on the telco's website and then details about pricing appeared, and then those details changed.

It hasn’t only been Vodafone preparing for the launch of the iPhone 4, which comes hot on the heels of the iPad release in New Zealand last week. Telecom and 2degrees have been touting plans and micro-SIMs which will enable customers to use both devices on their network.
