First liquidator report from Waterstone Insolvency due on July 19
By Sim Ahmed and Reseller News staff | Auckland | Tuesday, 17 July, 2012 | 73 Comments
Auckland-based IT company Maclean Computing is in liquidation, according to the Companies Office.
The Companies Office says Waterstone Insolvency was appointed as liquidators on July 13, with the first liquidator report due on July 19.
Waterstone will take over the management and running of the business, including the handling of its assets.
It also has final say on whether Maclean will continue to trade, a decision likely to affect Maclean’s clients, which it claims on its website to include Hubbards, Les Mills International, Hyundai, and more than 100 other businesses.
The government’s Insolvency and Trustee Service says most businesses put into liquidation usually close down.
The future of Maclean’s 50 staff also looks precarious, as the liquidators will seek to reduce cost to best make returns for Maclean’s outstanding creditors.
Computerworld is seeking comment from Maclean and Waterstone.
Last year, Maclean announced that it was outsourcing its procurement business to Acquire, a move that CEO Chris Maclean at the time described as a "win-win for everyone".
“As our market, and our business matures, we are keen to focus our resources on the areas that offer customers the best return. Our core strength is in building and supporting Rock Solid IT foundations, not procurement, so this partnership delivers an improved service for customers and a tighter focus for ourselves,” he said at the time.
Back in 2010, after 16 years in business, Maclean unveiled a new logo and tagline, 'rock solid IT'.
“It reflects our core focus which is concentrating on the infrastructure and foundation side," said marketing manager Andrew Charlesworth at the time of the announcement. "The tagline suggests that if you have a solid foundation than you can build the rest of the business on top of that.”
In February this year, Maclean passed on its smaller customers to Belton IT. At the time, Maclean described the move as the second part of a two-part process, with the first being to pass procurement to Acquire. “The first phase of this strategy implementation was our decision to partner with Acquire for product procurement. Whilst clearly an important part of any relationship with customers, we don’t believe that procurement is a core part of our value proposition. We also believe that procurement (the transaction itself as opposed to the design) has been largely commoditised, which means the primary decision factor becomes price rather than the transaction service," said Maclean.

It's NZ remember...
Whilst people have been predicting the IT industry will further consolodate for a long time, I think it's timely to remember that we are all trying to make a living in the same sector and country. Maclean have been a long standing, well respected brand in our game for many years, and they deserve credit for this. I for one see them as a kiwi technology icon, and wish Alan, Chris and the team all the best as they navigate this tough environment.

Management to blame
The problems started when Chris took over. While Allan was a people / customer focussed person, Chris was not. After Chris took over, they lost a lot of very good technical people. It was the beginning of the end.
It is unfortunate that Allan did not take over again, he could have turned this around.

Management to blame
I'd have to agree - Allan is a better people person than I am; but you can only do your best and I've been a little distracted dealing with a few financial dramas since taking the post. But the problems didn't really start there. We did have, and still have, an outstanding technical team that we're very proud of.

unbelievable
This is totally shocking - I heard rumours in the industry for the past few months but never knew it was as bad as this!!! How could once successful little company do a complete tailspin by employees and customers? WTF happened

Saddened but not suprised
It is sad to read this news, but for many in the industry it has been known for some time that McLean's were in a bad state.
With a large number of engineering staff leaving for other integrator's, it was only a matter of time before McLean's were not able to deliver on their promises.
I am sure BTG, CodeBlue and Lexel will be more than happy to talk with McLean's worried customers.

Saw it coming
It was pure hell being a customer with them. They had no idea in regards to what they were supposed to do, nor who we were as the customer. They spent more time attacking the customer rather than looking at their own short comings. We left them as quick as we could. You could see them spiralling downwards and knew they wouldn't last too long with the direction they were hell bent on pursuing.
Totally arrogant?....I agree.

Saw it coming
I can second this view. We were treated incredibly badly and ultimately we voted with our feet. Any company and management (and this goes to the top) which consistently treats its clients as if they are at fault/are idiots/like cash cows/doing them a favour deserves to go down in a flames. And I bet they don't learn from this either...

Not a proud moment for our IT community
Big up's to Outsource and Kinetics - good to see there's still some grace left in the IT community. Some of the comments on here are appalling. From what I've seen Chris has been running a good ship but coming back from an internal rip-off can't be easy.

Well said. It's funny how those throwing stones have all posted anonymously.
Allan and Chris along with their team have served us well for many years now, and I for one have always admired the lack or arrogance and willingness of the senior management to get in amongst any issues.
Very sad to see this announcement - all the very best to Chris, Allan and the rest of the Maclean team in this difficult time. Cheers guys!

Nobody likes to fail
but without losers, there can't be winners, and without failing you can never succeed. At the end of the day it's business and MCL wouldn't bat an eye lid at taking custom from another company. Let's hope the creditors can rescue something. If nothing else it's proven that Chris does not have the business talents of his father.
