But Gen-i says it remains committed to Cisco

Telecom and Gen-i are to use Polycom’s RealPresence video networking platform to deliver video-as-a-service (VaaS) to business clients.

A source hints there is already at least one client signed up, but no further detail is available.

However, Gen-i says this does not mean it is moving away from Cisco’s TelePresence, which it has been offering for some years. “Gen-i remains committed to Cisco as a key strategic partner for the delivery of collaboration solutions,” says David Crown, manager of strategic partnerships.

“Gen-i’s selection of Polycom’s RealPresence Platform provides an endpoint agnostic carrier grade video bridge with a seamless transition for our existing clients, including those currently using Cisco technology,” Crown says. “We believe it will enhance Gen-i’s ability to create a seamless experience for our clients across both Cisco and Polycom bridge options.”

“Gen-i is currently preparing to bring a range of VaaS offerings to market, the first of which is due to launch in November,” he says.

Everything not as it seems Not everything is spin, TNZ and gen-i have been partners with Polycom for many years longer than Cisco have even been selling VC technology.

Most of the customers are on Polycom Solutions already and this project seems to be a powerful upgrade to an existing Polycom powered solution with many very significant government and enterprise customers already using it daily.

TNZ's own internal rooms and infrastructure provided by Polycom currently outnumbers the ones from Cisco by 3 to 1 (a lot like sales in NZ).

If Cisco want to compete then maybe they need to stop pushing over priced under featured boxes and try real partnering, rather than running to their "crowny" whenever someone stands up to the self entitled bully boy tactics.

It's a good thing gen-i partners with both Polycom and Cisco, at least that gives the customers a real choice between a partner who cares about the future of video collaboration in NZ and another focused on nothing but revenue.

I for one am looking forward to seeing this very cool solution in gen-i's kit bag.

Everything not as it seems when you give a distorted picture of the truth, that is spin. Pretending this company is still doing business at any press worthy volume is spin.

And in NZ, Tandberg the company Cisco aquired for it's global "market share" (after they could not get Polycom) never got close to Polycom... They are unlikely to too while they keep losing good staff and are back peddling in most of the major deals.

Bet both ways. I hope this means Gen-i will no longer force Cisco when it is not the right solution, sure half the collaboration product team drive cars powered by Cisco. But let's see the customer come first.

note to gen-i spin team I would recommend letting your existing partners know when you're going to signal a change in direction. A quick note before the release goes out does wonders to keep the likes of Cisco feeling like a key member of the gen-i virtual team, and means Mr Crown doesn't need to counter and raise you a release to keep the ship on an even keel.

note to gen-i spin team Well they did per-empt it by pumping Cisco earlier in the week to try and keep them sweet. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/ict-news/news/article.cfm?c_id=55&objectid=10840934. Left out the price tag!
A number of companies in NZ have been providing these services for sometime if not to a better level, guess they just can't match the PR machine of these guys. But I'm sure they will continue innovate their own offerings also. Competition is great!!
