Telecom’s CDMA network suffers outage

Customers on Telecom’s legacy CDMA mobile network experienced major service disruptions this morning.
The problems started around 9am today, with the loss of 32 CDMA cell sites. These are located mainly in Auckland City and South, North Shore, Waitakere, as well Rodney District.
However, Northland cell sites were also affected, as were sites in Lower Hutt, Tasman District and Christchurch.
The outage on the CDMA network comes hard on the heels of two nationwide outages on the incumbent's new XT 3G service in December and January.
Alcatel-Lucent is Telecom's technology partner for both the CDMA and XT 3G networks.
Telecom spokeswoman Katherine Murphy confirmed today's outage, saying "We had some issues with some CDMA cellsites in Auckland and Northland but they're up and running now."
According to Murphy, the reason for the fault was "a piece of hardware" that failed. Telecom reverted to the backup however, and Murphy says that as there's overlapping coverage in most places, overall impact to customers would have been limited.
Also, this time around the outage was short: the duration of the fault was just over half an hour, Murphy says.
