Despite reports that New Zealand is to miss out on the first international distribution of Amazon.com's Kindle e-book device, sources within Vodafone say the mobile phone giant is talking to Amazon about bringing the Kindle to New Zealand.
The sources wouldn't be drawn on details such as the date when the Kindle would be available or New Zealand pricing. These are subject to what the sources call "deep discussions" with the massive US e-tailer.
Kindle was launched in the Pacific region this week, after intially only being available in the US. Amazon's international version of Kindle utilises HSDPA 3G, wi-fi, and USB for transfers of books, and can be shipped to Australia and most of the Pacific nations.
Rebecca Earl, sponsorship and mobile PR manager for Telecom, says Telecom sees the appeal of the Kindle and is looking into our options for a device of that type.
However, there are content considerations, and for this reason, it’s too soon to comment further, Earl says.
