Auckland app agency officially launches its Windows Metro specific development services

What could be the world’s first fully dedicated dev shop for Windows Metro apps officially launched last night on the Auckland waterfront.

Marker Metro is an Auckland company which has designed apps for The New Zealand Herald, Trade Me, and the Rugby World Cup, the last of which won the inaugural Windows Phone Solution of the Year award from Microsoft New Zealand last year.

Marker Metro CEO Keith Patton says the team have been working on Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 apps for the last year - but only officially launched their services last night.

Marker Metro designs and develops its apps entirely with Microsoft’s Metro interface.

Metro is the new design aesthetic which dominates the new Windows 8 operating system, and can be seen on Windows Phone 7 devices like the Nokia Lumia 800. According to Microsoft it focuses on a full screen experience, and removes older design elements like faux-chrome toolbars.

Metro apps will be the only supported app style on ARM devices running Windows 8 , like the recently announced Surface tablet.

Marker Metro is looking to take advantage of this fact.

“Microsoft Windows powers the lion’s share of consumer PCs around the world today,” says Patton.

“It’s natural that millions of users will soon upgrade to Windows 8, either through a software upgrade or on new PCs and tablets like the Surface device just announced.”

Marker Metro was founded by Jon Beattie current COO. Beattie is also the founder of Auckland-based digital agency Marker Studios.

Smart These guys are obviously smart. Windows 8 will place Microsoft apps in front of most computer users in the world (far more than apple and android users combined).

Great work I have seen first hand some of the work Marker Metro are doing. Actually I have most of their phone apps pinned on my phone's start screen.

It's great to see their world-class software development and design happening right here in Auckland.

Great work True, but they could always change I guess. You do wonder why its a worlds first. That would be a bit scary especially given how long wp7 has been out in the market.

Great work if you look at what is coming product wise (windows 8 client and windows 8 phone), I think this is a great move to position themselves to capitalise on the future potential for these devices. Nice work Market Metro and best of luck :)
