ITEX Computerworld Awards 2012 finalists announced
ICT Project of the Year, ICT Manager of the Year and Software Developer of the Year

The finalists for the ITEX Computerworld Awards 2012 have been chosen and the winners will be announced at a networking function to be held at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland on November 8.
ICT Project of the Year
The judges are looking for a project that made a difference. Does it achieve its stated objectives and business case? Does it make cost-effective use of innovative concepts or technologies, and how have challenges been met and overcome? The finalists are:
SCIRT IT establishment
Following the Christchurch earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011, the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) was commissioned by the government and tasked with rebuilding Christchurch’s horizontal infrastructure within five years. Fulton Hogan was selected to establish all IT systems for the SCIRT alliance which was formed in June 2011. All processes, IT systems and supporting infrastructure had to be defined, designed and progressively rolled out over a six month period. The scope of the project included the fit out of a purpose-built headquarters to house 300 staff, and providing them with email, file and print, web connectivity, and the definition of processes to support the rebuild of Christchurch’s infrastructure.
Given the size of the project and the speed in which SCIRT had to be up and running the traditional approach of fully understanding project requirements and going through a selection process wouldn’t work.
Instead the project team had to take an agile approach to quickly deliver all systems, while ensuring the governance was in place to ensure that each project delivered the desired outcome.
NZTA Business Continuity Programme
The New Zealand Transport Agency has hosted several critical systems including the Drivers Licence and Motor Vehicle register on a Unisys mainframe that had an end of support life from August 2014.
Out of eight possible options, the Business Continuity Programme team decided to complete a migration of the registry systems to a Windows platform.
The first phase of the delivery was to implement a web-based user interface (UI) for the drivers licence, motor vehicle and other registers. Some of the key challenges to the rollout were a wide range of internal staff based in numerous regional offices, and a large agent network (VTNZ, AA, VINZ) in multiple offices across the country.
In order to minimise impacts to users a design decision was made to minimise the functional and look and feel changes as a result of moving to a browser based interface. The Drivers Licence interface was developed with essentially the same look and feel and functionality as the existing UI, while other registers’ UI provided a very similar look and feel while introducing some added value functionality such as list boxes.
Rugby World Cup 2011 IT & T Programme
The Rugby World Cup is the third largest sporting event in the world, behind the Football World Cup and the Summer Olympics. To manage the tournament’s return to New Zealand in 2011, the government and the New Zealand Rugby Union set up a special purpose organisation, Rugby New Zealand 2011, in 2005.
The IT & T programme provided management, data (WAN/LAN), wireless, security, voice, mobile, hardware/software procurement and the business applications required to manage the event at all tournament venues. The IT & T ecosystem supported many of the core tournament functions including ticketing, and the accreditation of media, broadcast, commercial partners, VIPs and the teams themselves.
Separate infrastructure was provided to enable international media and broadcasters to distribute content around the world.
In terms of scope, visibility and complexity, the programme was unprecedented. It required faultless management of a geographically spread venue network spanning 12 stadiums, 54 hotels, four datacentres and 14 other social, administration and media sites, as well as the co-ordination of over 20,000 temporary employees including over 5,000 volunteers and hundreds of IT professionals.

ICT Manager of the Year, sponsored by Candle
The judges are looking for an ICT Manager whose clever use of technology added value to their company or organisation, and who could show the impact that their leadership skills has had on the business. The finalists are:
Kausalia Apparao, Sealord Group
A business analyst manager, Kausalia Apparao has worked at Sealord Group for nine years, and specifically as manager of the IS team for the last 18 months. She has five direct reports. Prior to working in IS she was involved in the company’s ERP implementation project. Apparao says her contribution to the business includes ensuring the IS governance process works correctly within the business, ensuring resource management and release management is prioritised, and the delivery of IT and process solutions to the business (up to 70 projects at any one time).
Colin Dixon, Wynyard Group
Colin Dixon, who has a degree in mechanical engineering, has been with Jade Software for 19 years. During that time he has been development management for the global rail software division, a cornerstone of the company. His current role is product manager, financial crime, for Jade’s new division the Wynyard Group. As part of the Jade Leadership Programme, Dixon has driven the implementation of Lean practices – streamlined practices and process within the business to create a more productive and efficient working environment.
David Scott, Z Energy
An ICT manager for 12 years, David Scott is currently head of business technology and transformation at Z Energy leading a team of 30. He previously worked in the financial sector, with six years at BNZ and followed by three year at Westpac. He was the programme manager for Z Energy’s Enhance project, which was joint-winner at last year’s ITEX Computerworld Awards.
The scope of the project included the design, build and deployment of a systems to cater meet the needs of 250 staff, more than 300 service stations and truckstops, and 170,000 customers who visit Z Energy service stations daily.
ICT Manager of the Year judges are Ralph Chivers, CEO, Institute of Directors in New Zealand; Michael Foley, director, Voco; and Steven Mayo-Smith, CIO, Livestock Improvement Corporation.
Software Developer of the Year
This award recognises the creative and practical skills of software developers, on which all ICT innovation rests. The judges are therefore looking for someone who has created software with tangible benefits, tested the software, overcome challenges and measured success and contributed to software projects outside their role. The finalists are:
Scott Fletcher, Aura RedEye Security
Having discovered a passion for information and web application security during various projects for commercial and government clients, Scott Fletcher joined Aura RedEye Security in 2010 as a security consultant and trainer.
Since then he has expanded the penetration testing services team while also refining and delivering security training courses for individuals and large corporate clients.
In ten years of software development, Fletcher has been exposed to many operating systems, platforms and frameworks, including .NET (C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET), Ruby, Web Services (SOAP and REST), Ruby On Rails, PHP, SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL, Microsoft Windows and Unix systems (Linux and OSX).
Keith Patton, Marker Metro
Steve Wiltshire, FINNZ
A software developer for 30 years, Steve Wiltshire has coded in COBOL, C, DataFlex, Visual basic for DOS, LANSA on AS/400, Visual Basic from version 2 to 6 and VB.NET. On the database side he has used MS Access, MS SQL Server 6, 7, 2000, 2005 and more recently 2008.
Software Developer of the Year judges are John Ascroft, CIO, Jade Software; Paul Matthews, CEO, Institute of IT Professionals NZ; and Brendan McCane, head of Computer Science, Otago University.
