Visionstream has secured a $21 million contract for the West Gate Freeway managed motorway project.

Visionstream has won a $21 million contract for the West Gate Freeway managed motorway project.

The Melbourne project is part of the Australian government's $60 million National Smart Managed Motorways Program. The program aims to reduce congestion and improve traffic management using smart infrastructure technology.

Other projects underway in the program include the M4 in Sydney and the Gateway Motorway in Brisbane. All of the projects have a completion date of June 2014.

Under the contract, Visionstream--a subsidiary of the Leighton group--will provide an intelligent transport system (ITS) and communications infrastructure, Visionstream said. The contract includes design and construction of the ITS and two years of operation and maintenance, it said.

Visionstream will also design, supply, install and integrate ITS devices including lane use signs, variable message signs, traffic data collection stations and CCTV cameras, it said.
